Story-first adventures worth playing on your phone

April 20, 2026 · Lukas Feldmann

There's a myth that phones are only good for quick, twitchy games. I disagree. Some of the most affecting adventures I've played this year were on my phone, played in bed with headphones on.

Hollow Lantern is the one I keep recommending. It's slow, it's quiet, and it trusts you to notice details instead of pointing at them. That kind of restraint works beautifully on a small screen where the whole town fills your view.

What makes a story-first mobile game work is pacing that matches how you actually play. Short chapters you can finish in a sitting beat sprawling ones you have to abandon halfway. A good adventure lets you put it down and come back without losing the thread.

If you're new to the genre, start with something short. Four focused hours that stay with you beat forty hours of filler every time.

Play these with sound on if you can. Atmosphere is half the point, and a good pair of earbuds turns a nice game into a memorable one.
